master of music – the programme

The Master of Music at Rotterdam Conservatoire is a two-year course based on international standards.

At the conservatoire there are three different Master’s courses to choose between

    -    The master’s course on an instrument, the so-called

          Performance Master

    -    The master’s course in Composition

    -    The master’s course in Music technology

There are two aims which are central to these courses:

Development of instrumental mastery for the Performance Master, compositional level for the master’s course in Composition and for the master’s course in Music technology the level within music technology. For all three masters the goal is to get the musical profundity to as high a level as possible.

By means of an investigative path (the Artistic Reseach), a student is stimulated to elaborate on his individual interests, or start to develop a specialism. The aim is to support the student’s individual artistic choices as much as possible, so that he can create further chances and possibilities in his career as a musician. The methods to use for this research will be geared to the student and consist of making music, reflection and knowledge expansion.

Within the Master it is possible to trace out an individual study path, in which areas of study from the five academies (Classical, Jazz, Pop Music, World Music and Muziektheater) can be combined. That’s why the Master is open to all students of music who possess the required entry level, from prospective concert pianists to crossover virtuosos, from thinkers to doers!

The study is organised into three components

1.Main subject and main subject-related activities, such as

       ensembles and workshops.

2.The artistic research. This starts with an introduction to

research methods lasting three months, followed by doing

one’s own research under the direction of a research supervisor.

3.Open space to augment one’s own individual study, which can be

filled in from a large number of available minors and optional

       subjects.
