Procedures before and after arrival in the Netherlands

* Please take care of your birth certificate (legalized by Ministry of Justice of Ministry of Foreign Affairs in your country and officially translated in English of Dutch) before coming to the Netherlands. It is mostly also available at the Embassy of your country in the Netherlands but this makes the procedure longer and more expensive.
* Tuberculosis test
The test is free of charge at GGD Schiedamsedijk 95, across from Leuvehaven metro station; The GGD is open every day except Wednesday from 8.30 till 11.30 and from 13.30 till 15.00 hours

2. ENROLMENT PROCEDURES
Make sure your enrolment as a student is completed, which means the following actions are taken: you have a Studielink-account (www.studielink.nl), placed a request for enrolment and you accepted your place at Codarts. Furthermore you sent the following documents to Codarts: certified copy diploma, official translation of the diploma in English or Dutch, copy valid passport, form “Payment of college fees” (and the college fee is paid) and the form “Statement Study address”. For any questions please contact the Central Student Administration, Rotterdam Building, Aert van Nesstraat 45, telephone number: 010-2171020, e-mail address: csa@codarts.nl.
3. PLACE TO LIVE
Before coming to the Netherlands it is advisable to start your orientation on housing, do it as soon as possible!
For more information and application for a room click www.stadswonen.nl or please contact our student counsellor Ms Ineke Top: dtop@codarts.nl
4. LANGUAGE
Codarts upholds the code of conduct of the Higher Education behavioural code national committee. An admission requirement for foreign students is that they should have sufficient mastery of the English language. Codarts upholds the norm that a student should show that he satisfies the
minimum of 5.5 at IELTS level ('General Training') or a comparable norm. The examination committee of Codarts establishes whether the student satisfies the norm. The student can produce documents from which it can be seen that he possesses the right level, or take a test. The test is a component of the binding study report as laid down in the Binding Study Report regulation.
After arrival in the Netherlands
5. RESIDENCE PERMIT
See in step 1 which requirements apply to you.
6. DUTCH BANK ACCOUNT
Codarts International Office will help you to open a Dutch Bank account. For this contact Ms. Asia Ross (jmross@codarts.nl) as soon as possible after your arrival in the Netherlands
7. MEDICAL INSURANCE
Staying in the Netherlands also means that you have to get good (health) insurance. Codarts recommends a good and complete insurance through AON (international student insurance).
For more specific information surf to www.students-insurance.eu or e-mail our student counsellor, Ms Ineke Top: dtop@codarts.nl. She can give you advice and help you to take out the insurance. Visit: www.nuffic.nl
8. REGISTRATION AT THE CITY HALL
Address: Coolsingel 40 in Rotterdam (Entrance Burgerzaken, left side of the building)
Open: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 8:00-16:00 and Thursday: 8:00-13:30
Required documents:

- your rent contract + rent statement (to get at the City Hall) + photocopy of the landlord’s passport
- confirmation letter from the IND that the student applied for the residence permit
9. BSN NUMBER (security number)
Together with your registration in the City Hall you can apply for a BSN-number (security number) (see step 8 for the required documents)
You will need this number in case you would like to work
Inform your bank in the Netherlands as soon as you have your BSN-number (but not later than 3 months after you opened your bank account)
10. WORK
You will receive your residence permit exclusively as a student, which means that you are not allowed to work regularly for money, except for students from most EU/EER-countries.
However: non-EU/EER-citizens and citizens from new EU/EER-countries (Bulgaria and Rumania) can work maximum 10 hours per week or full time during the months June-July-August, but in all cases the employer needs to apply for a working permit through the Central Organisation for Work and Income.
Working while studying means that you are obligated (by the Dutch law) to take out basic health care insurance.
For more information about this contact our student counsellor Ms.Ineke Top (dtop@codarts.nl)

There are several ways to prove sufficient means for the study and costs of living in the Netherlands, depending on the financial situation of the student:
1. The student has sufficient financial means on her/his own bank account. (not a savings account!)
In this case, a photocopy of a recent specification from their bank account or a recent original bank statement is required, mentioning the student’s name, bank account number and the available amount of money. The name, address and telephone number of the bank should also be mentioned on this statement.
Please note: this is the easiest way to prove sufficient financial means!
2. The student has been awarded a grant or scholarship.
In this case a photocopy of an official statement is required, confirming the amount of money and for which period the student will receive it.
3. Someone in the Netherlands will provide sufficient financial means for the student.
In this case the guarantor in the Netherlands has to prove that he/she has sufficient financial means for both himself/herself (plus own family, if relevant) and the student.
The required documents from the guarantor:
- a fully completed standard guarantee statement
- photocopies of his/her current employment contract
- original recent employer’s certificate
- photocopies of recent salary specifications (last three months)
- photocopy of his/her passport
- original print out from the City Register, also confirming the marital status of the guarantor
4. Somebody outside the Netherlands will provide sufficient financial means for the student.
In this case the guarantor outside the Netherlands has to prove that he/she has sufficient financial means for the student.
The required documents from the guarantor:
- an original statement mentioning the amount of money to be transferred to the student and for which period ( standard example is available on the Nuffic website: http://www.nuffic.nl/immigration/pdf/Financialstatement-garantsteller.doc)
- photocopy of his/her passport or identity card
- relevant bank documentation
- Or photocopies of the current employment contract
